About Me

My photo
Welcome to second grade! This is my ninth year at Pueblo Del Sol Elementary and my fifteenth year teaching. I was a military spouse for 11 years, so I have taught all over the country! In fact, I even taught first grade for three years in Italy! I have a BA in Psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara and I completed a teaching program at San Jose State University. I completed my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Reading. I am certified to teach in California, Georgia, DODDS, and Arizona. I live with my husband, Chris, and our two children, Tyler and Kylie. I am very excited to continue to work in a school with high standards for student learning. I also have very high expectations for my students and I love to challenge them and watch them grow into life long learners!

Our Classroom

The heart of our classroom is our library. We call it the Jungle Tent. The Herd loves to read, and we have so many books to choose from ...

After we select books from the Jungle Tent, we put them in our reading boxes. Our reading boxes help save time because we do not have to spend reading time looking for books.

At the reading table, we meet in reading groups to discuss books and practice reading strategies. Students read with Mrs. Holston several times each week.
We also use this table for guided writing. During guided writing, we practice our writing skills and get feedback so that we can improve our writing.

Our Safari CAFE board is a menu of reading strategies! Our reading buddies introduce us to new reading strategies. Then we post the strategies on our CAFE board along with a picture of our new reading buddy. The Herd uses these strategies when we read.

These are some of our Comprehension reading buddies. These reading strategies help us understand what we read.

We meet at the reading carpet every morning. We read together and practice our reading strategies. Mrs. Holston introduces new reading strategies and reading buddies at the carpet.
This is also where we share our writing (The Herd is full of authors!) and sing songs!

This is our math carpet. We use our math stations to practice and review important math and problem solving skills. Daily calendar activities help us review important skills.

Our birthday monkeys are born to be wild!

There are 8 computers in the Herd! We use our computers to take AR quizzes, practice math skills, take assessments, and publish our writing!

We love listening to books! At our listening center, we enjoy great stories and then complete activities about the books.

In the Herd, we spend a lot of time engaged in meaningful, hands-on literacy centers. We love to work together to complete tasks and problem solve!

We love our classroom! Our classroom is the perfect place to learn!
